Is it just me or does SLI still make you think "scan line interleave"

I know this is kind of OT, but I still think of 3DFX when I hear SLI. I had a diamond Monster 3d II but never got to do SLI with it. I kinda miss 3DFX 🙁

I take it you prefer the name Crossfire?

seriously though, its a name (its the tech that matters)... I guess AMD do have some fun ones (names) though;

AUSUM (Antilles Unlocking Switch for Uber Mode) (which boost clock speeds + volts, ocing)
BACO(N) (Bus Active Card On (now)) (AMD version of Optimus)

Thats because NVIDIA bought 3dfx partly for the SLI tech, and are still useing it today.

Nvidia had SLI before ATI had crossfire.
Today their pretty much equal in scaleing, and workability with drivers ect.
But back then long ago, it was a egde for nvidia, though not so today.

nVidia just took the acronym that already knew and assigned some random technobabble term to it. "Scaleable link interface" lol

Ahh the joy of 2 x12 mb Voodoo2's, one of which I may or may have not stolen from the 3dfx stand in London after filming an interview with them in 1999.

Not quite true. Nvidia did buy out 3DFX and all their tech, but they did not use the technology behind 3DFX's SLI (scan line interweave). AFR and SFR rendering are completely different techniques from the old SLI back in the day.

And yes, I do still think of 3DFX and scan line when I read SLI sometimes 🙂
Really miss 3DFX.

I imagine that NV would probably pay more homage to 3DFX in their naming conventions had their first attempt with the GeForce FX series not been synonymous with failure. I doubt we'll ever see anything "FX" from NV ever again.

the real amusing thing is, scan line interleave actually accurately describes how SLI works. Since each GPU renders half the frame.
