Is it just me, or do asian parents...

stress their kids's education too damn much?

being an only child, my parents bitch at me day in and day out of how important education is; you're a useless turd if you don't have at least a 4 year degree, and you won't get anywhere in life. well guess what, happiness is not about how much money you have.

is this an asian thing, or do white families also experience the same event?

EDIT: oh yeah, and if your asian (oriental) family lives in the US, more than likely they own a restaurant.

You must not have any Asian friends.

I'm white, and at least half of my conversations with my Asian friends is how fvcked up their parents are.

I haven't met many unemployed, uneducated, slacker Asians (males at least), so I guess it works :D

it's just you. I've never heard of asian parents stressing education to their children :disgust:

I go through that all the time with my parents and they're both white. Asian parents are known to push their kids to excel at things, but it happens all across the board, too.

i'm asian and my parents never really pushed me too hard.. although it does seem like a lot of my asian friends did have very strict parents.

if you actually took the time to think about where your parents and their ancestors came from, what they had to go through, and what their own upbringing was, you wouldn't be asking such a question.

edit: maybe not your specific parents, but asian people in general.

it's not just you. it's a well known stereotype which happens to be nearly 100% true.

Haha, seriously. Every other post here by an Asian member involves bitching about his strict parents.

Lol that's what my mom said time to time, example:

"you know what, there's this friends kid I knew (asian) who got straight As and went to UC_blank_ & graduated at the age _blank_"

it really annoys me sometime lol :p

Its not just education either... they nag you on money, significant others, house, kids, etc.

around the time you hit 30 years old, I think something happens. Your attitude becomes "wow thank the lord that my parents cared so much about my future to create an almost hostile environment during my upbringing", while (from my own personal life) your caucasion friends start saying "god fvcking dammit why couldn't my parents push me like my asian friends parents."

Standardized tests started in Asia, and those tests, young people could take once (and only once) and it would decide their occupation.

Yea, I get that crap all the time.

"Blah Blah Blah has a MBA from UCB. Blah Blah just bought a $2 million house and married a beautiful young doctor/dentist.
Blah Blah just had a beautiful baby, when are you getting married?"

It's rough being asian. Just being above average is considered failure.

There are other cultures that could use some strict parenting and push for education. I'd say you are blessed that you do not belong to one of those groups.

Someone has to make enough money to take care of them when they're older.
