is it just me or are the newer linksys routers ugly?

I am looking for a cheap wireless router for my parent's house as I will be taking all my equipment with me once I'm done my basement where the servers will go. All the ones I seem to find are the linksys black roundish shiny ones. I don't care if it shines, the shape is just so ugly, and they seem overall bulky and hard to store with other equipment (can't stack or put it sideways etc).

Is it just me?

I dont buy them because since Crisco bought Linksys the quality and reliability has plummeted lol.

Cisco hater? I've never really had a bad experience with them since they were bought out, before is another story. But I've never really been all that impressed with any consumer grade routers, they're all a little flakey in my experience.

It's just more "streamlined". However, I do think that the fact that they changed the design (putting the antennas internally instead of externally) may have lead to a decrease in performance.

This is true, I often go through a couple routers before I get one I really like. too bad there arn't really any "mid range" routers. I don't want to pay for an enterprise class one, but I would not mind paying a few hundred bucks for a really good one. I don't have many issues with my dlinks though. (two routers are dlinks, they segment my network in two subnets)

Later on I'd like to either build one with a PC, or buy an enterprise class one, but no cash for that.

I have always Netgear routers (RT314, FVS318, FVG318) and find they work for the most part. Plus they are rectangular so easily stackable. I recently bought a Linksys WRT-54GL off eBay and find that the wireless connection process between the PC (during boot-up) and router is much much faster compared to the Netgear FVG318.

srsly, the 160N wont even work with VPN. stupid. the firmware has been screwed over so many times the techs actually linked a version that was 2 revs back from the current to fix the issues.

and i liked the stackable linksys stuff, still use it at my house.

The Linksys (Cisco) consumers Routers were always bellow Mediocre over priced devices. Routers.

They got their fame from aggressive marketing and the shear luck that some of the Models were the first one to be fitted with 3rd party firmware.

So ugly is the least of the "evils".

P.S. The Wireless is mediocre even with the 3rd party firmware. However in general the Models with the large memory and 3rd party firmware are a Good deal if it can be found for a good price.

I find even some lower end real Cisco routers suck for VPN. One of our clients has the bottom of the line PIX and the VPN constantly drops. Sure it's lower end, but come on, they still paid a few grand for it, you'd think it could at least handle a couple techs VPNed in at once.

I now swear by openvpn. If ever I get the choice, that's what I'm deploying. I just need to find a way to repackage it in an easy to deploy solution (for the server and client).

I have also had performance issues with commercial routers, they just dont respond well. And the new linksys routers are not up to par either...in looks or performance.

Is wireless-N boosting the performance router-side? Draft or otherwise?

I have one of the "ugly" wireless routers, but I couldn't care less about how a wireless router looks. It sits behind my couch, out of site, and works perfectly.

Yeah i bought one of the new ugly linksys and it was crap, ran hot, dropped wireless, missing features my 4 year old netgear was capable of. In the end i bought a netgear WNDR3700, its working great so far, seems to be that way for everyone else that bought one too.

Absolutely not. I have an 831 running downstairs that has been rock solid. I found it funny imo the quality and reliability of linksys soho routers went south after being acquired by the most reliable name in networking.
