Is it just me or are people driving slower

As a rule of thumb, I try never to be the fastest car on the road as that seems to reduce my chances of getting a ticket significantly. Normally, I drive about 80 in a 70 zone and am usually middle of the pack in terms of speed. These days, I noticed that even while driving 75, I am normally the fastest person on the road. I assume this is a measure to save gas. Anyone else notice this phenomenon?

I'm guessing a few folks are "slowing" it down for whatever their reasons are but on the highway I see no difference whatsoever.

I have noticed a significant slow down here in the Milwaukee area.

Nope, everyone in my area still drives 80-85 on the freeway, and up to 70 or 80 in 55mph 2 lane highways.

its bad in LA.

everyone is driving slower because gas is expensive.

LA has too many cars. I think population to car ratio is up to 1.5cars per person.

Anyhow im the oposite of everyone, and i hope gas prices goes up more. I really dont mind paying the extra if it will keep 25% more cars OFF the street.

I even prayed for a TOLL road in Los Angeles.

But dude Traffic blows in LA.

I dont want to sound raciest by this comment:
But i hope the 7-8 dollar gas price will keep most of the illegal uninsured cars OFF the street.

And believe me, theres a LOT in LA.

My friend got hit by an uninsured motorist, and his UM couldnt cover all the damages. The funnier thing is the guy offered to give his car to my friend to pay him back.

I find it incredibly annoying when people drive a few miles per hour under the speed limit on certain sections of road where I know if I drive a certain speed I'll hit all the green lights. For example... on my way home from work I get off the highway to get on Michigan Ave. and I know when I leave that stoplight, if I drive 60 mph (in a 55 zone) the next light I come to will change to green by the time I get there... and if I continue at 60, the next light will also be green, whereas if I drive 50 or 55, that light will have turned red. If I continue through that light, I know if I drive 62 or 63 for the next 7 or 8 miles I'll hit the next two stoplights while they're green also. Then as I turn onto a city street (45 mph zone) I know if I accelerate briskly and drive about 47 or 48 mph I'll make every stop light on a 4-5 mile stretch of road before I make a right turn onto another city road where if I drive 40 mph, I'll pass the last stoplight before I get home while it's green.

I always drive slow anyway. I'm cheap, and that means I go the speed limit. Don't like it, go around.

Puhhlease. My Crown Victoria does 28-30 mpg on my highway commute and it weighs 4,000 lbs and has a V8 engine.

My biggest gripe with gas prices isn't the cars going slower...its all the old people that can barely walk and the generally retarded people that are now trying (and failing) to ride a bicycle again. Jesus Christ...the spandex crew can be annoying with their occasional dickwad side by side riding, but these newbies are all over the place and half of them are whobbling around like a 5 year old that got his first bike. I swear, an old man almost fell over in front of me on the road the other day...I don't need that on my mind!

Apparently they're taking that "you never forget how to ride a bike" thing to literally. I think there might a 30 year limit on that one, and it doesn't apply if you currently need a walker to get the mail.

I got on I-285 in Atlanta this past weekend and cars were still flying by me at 70/80 mph. I had my cruise control set to 65 and was getting 30+ mpg.

They aren't necessarily assholes. In my prius I try to coast/glide as much as possible to stop from using the electric and it increases my MPG a ton.

Everybody's driving at the posted speed limit around my region. I haven't been on the freeway for a while. Driving local saves more gas for me.

Yeah, everybody is doing that to try and save gas here. They drive with windows open, though, and keep heavy crap on their cars, and other things that uses more gas than just going slower than or as fast as the posted speed limit.

I've slowed down on the freeway myself quite a bit. I normally drive (drove) between 10-15 MPH over the limit, but in recent weeks, I've tried setting the cruise at 62-65 on the freeway, just for shits and giggles. Much to my surprise, I'm NOT getting passed nearly as often as I would have just a few months ago. Sure, there are still the idiots like me who fly by at 80+, but for the most part, people have slowed WAY down. A nice benefit has been that the Expedition has gone from 17-18 mpg on the highway to 22+ That's a significant improvment! Of course, as soon as I get off the freeway and back onto surface streets, it drops to 13 mpg again...:(
