Is it just me or 1.2 GHz Althlon-B = 1.2 GHz Althlon-C??

Hi floks!

I bought a 1.2 GHz Althlon-B (200 MHz FSB) and a ASUS A7V133 Mobo. I got the Althlon-B basically because here in CHILE we haven't got any Althlons-C yet!! However, I started playing with the BIOS settings and clocked my Althlon to 1.2 GHz but using 266 MHz FSB (133*9 instead of factory's default 100*12). The Althlon has worked like a jewel, it hasn't even heated up over 59º C, which was the same temperature it was when running at 200 MHz FSB.
Is it just me or maybe AMD isn't making two flavors of 1.2 GHz and higer Althlons and just setting the FSB to 200 MHz in some and 266 MHz in others? Another intresting observation is that my 1.2 GHz althlon wasn't multiplyer locked :)

Well, thoughts anyone? Maybe you can get an Althlon-C for the price of an Althlon-B? Is the CPU core of Althlons-B the same as the core of Althlons-C??

Cheers!

Of course Athlon B = Athlon C.

The CPU doesn't care what the FSB is, 1200Mhz is 1200Mhz.

The Cs have a default multiplier of 9 and FSB of 133, the B is default of 12/100. If you change it will run the same.

The chipset on your motherboard "cares" about FSB speed, the CPU doesn't. The CPU only "cares" about over all clock speed.

So basically, you're telling me that for less money (the cost of an Althlon-B) you can get better perfomance than what you paid for (that of an Althlon-C)??

I mean, the CPU cores are exactly the same on both CPUs??

Thanks!

Yes they are exactly the same.
The catch is with the Athlon B you have to fiddle with your BIOS and maybe connect the L1 bridges.

The Athlon C defaults to that speed. But like for me, I was looking at a SocketA board that had no multiplier adjustments so I was SOL, on using a B.

But if your board has multiplier adjustments and you don't mind connecting the bridges, then yes they are the same.

Thanks Noriaki!!

Seems that I got lucky and all of my L1 bridges were closed, so the CPU wasn't multiplyer locked. And athe ASUS A7V133 MoBo lets you change FSB and multiplyer from the BIOS, so it wasn't a big deal...

Great, seems that I saved my self a few bucks :D

Hi there, LunoTIK

i just built the system on last wednesday, so I'm gonna let it go on standard speces (except for the 133 FSB) for a while. Besides, 1.2 GHZ is more than enough for my needs! :D

Cheers!
