I'm a college student so I applied for a part time job as a delivery driver (which I have done before at a different company). I filled out an app. and while I was there, I talked to the manager. The conversation went well and from the way she was talking she seemed interested in hiring me. When I was leaving she told me that she would call me in a couple of days. It has been over a week, so I'm assuming that they decided not to hire me. Would it be innapropriate to go in and ask why?

I dont think so, I did it once, drafted a long and very formal letter asking her how I can improve myself... I didnt get hired so I had nothing to loose.

A week is not a long time, they might just still be doing other interviews, plus they have other things to do. While this is important to you, its just another position they are filling, its not a big deal to them. That being said, there's nothing wrong with simply calling and asking how things are going, and ask if there is anything else you can provide to help the process. Do not call up asking why you didn't get the job, it sets a negative tone for the conversation.

I think a better question would be to ask them to give you a status update on your hiring process.

Yeah give them a call and touch base with them.

Edit: About whether or not they have even turned you down yet.

Don't use the phrase "touch base" though.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I forgot that they have to do a MVR to check my driving record, if I am still a candidate for the job then that might be the problem if it is delayed or something. I'll check back on Monday to get a status update.

EDIT: Actually, I guess it would be Tuesday since Monday is Labor Day.

How many times did you say "Actually" and "I guess" during the interview?

Yeah, just call them asking about the status. Some companies like it when people are assertive enough and "pumped up" about a job. Just calling to inquire may get you back in the loop even if they decided it wasn't a job for you. People hire for different reasons. Passion is one thing. If they think someone wants to be hired by the company, they will likely be a better worker.

On the other hand, when interviewing and applying for jobs, its a solid fact, only 10% of the time you get a job that way. Most job hires are through references. If you knew someone who worked there you are 90% more likely to get hired. So expect 9 out of 10 places you apply to for you to get a job. Of course the odds are better for lower paying jobs, and part time positions, etc.

Thats what they told me in unemployment class where you had to be trained in how to apply and what to expect from the job world when I lost my job in 2003.

Actually, I guess it wasn't technically an interview at all. And actually, I guess I find that I say "actually" or "I guess" when I'm typing on the computer a lot more than I do when I'm actually talking, I guess.

That's some great advice, thanks. When I talked to the manager while I was applying I intentionally brought up that I was friends with a driver that worked there up until a few months ago (he quit because he got married). It's part of the reason why I thought the conversation went well since the manager seemed to like my friend.

As others have mentioned, you should call or write to tell them that you're still interested in the position and that they should free to contact you with any additional questions, comments, or concerns. They like to know that you're still interested, and it shows initiative on your part. You're a go-getter now!

They probably aren't done looking for people yet, so you definitely shouldn't go in there and ask why they didn't hire you. It sounds very defeatist to assume you've been passed up already when they probably haven't finished interviewing people yet. Some places can take months or more to choose the right candidate for a position! And while I'm sure its not always the case, I've always received a call or letter letting me know I didn't get the job when that was the case.
