Is it important to set a root password in Linux Mandrake 8.1?

I'm wondering if it's necessary. I don't have any of my Windows OS passworded because I don't like the hassle. Is this the same or is it something that I'm not foreseeing?

If you are going to be on the internet, or network it is important to have it set. If you use KDE you can set the auto log in feature to log you in automatically. Always run as a user and not as root. It will save you in the end.
