now that photoshop CS is the latest version, is it legal for me to pass old versions of it around? like photoshop 4?

If you give the legit copy to one person, I highly doubt anyone will care. If you start making copies and passing it around to everyone, then they'll care.

No.

Dang it, I hate it when people phrase a questino one way in the topic and the opposite way in the message body.

When you say "pass it around," it sounds like you're talking about giving it to multiple people. That's definitely illegal. As other people have said, unless you used it to purchase an upgrade version of newer software, you can give away or sell your original copy of the old software though.

so long as ur not using the old version as an "upgrade" to photoshop CS all is good....baring as said above your not making copies and passing them around

I think it's ok to give your one legit copy of an older version away, or sell it even, provided you bought the new version outright.. but if you upgraded it, then it's not. technically.

I think.

Several years back, I used to pass my old software off to a consignment shop. They made me sign a form releasing my right to the software. I guess now that I think about it, the company probably wasn't completely legal in having me sign that form. However, they probably felt like it protected them.

If I'm not mistaken... a couple of software companies state that this is not allowed in their licensing agreement...
