Is it illegal to...

...drive in the middle of a road on a two lane residential street?

I do it and when a car is coming from the other direction, I go on my side of the street, then go back into the middle. I notice a lot of other people do this too. My dad even told me to do it so "morons backing out of their driveway without looking don't crash into me."

But is it illegal? Like, if I were driving down the street and a cop is behind me, could I get a ticket? Even if there is no defined stripe separating the two lanes?

I do it from time to time, not exactly in the middle though. I'm probably moved over a foot or two inside neighborhoods unless there is a car. It's like, why drive next to so many mailboxes, people, the sidewalk, etc.

Yes you can be pulled over for this. No, it's not likely. The only times I have heard of this happening are late at night when the police a basically trolling for drunks and they'll stop essentially anyone. A friend of mine had it happen to them at night on a "1.5 lane" country lane with no divider line.

Yea, the cop pretty much has to be either on drunk watch or in dick mode to stop you for that, but people have certainly been ticketed for less ("improper use of equipment" for hanging a Car-Freshner from the rear view... 😕 )
