It is not illegal. It is illegal to be "APC" (actual physcial control). A cop once told me to place the keys in front of one of the tires. Roll on top of them and stop. Now when the cops come they can't find the keys and you are not in APC.
Wouldn't you be considered in APC when you roll the car over your key?

How are they going to find you if you're in the back of your van asleep?

I'd put up something so people can't look in... because if they did they might think you're dead in your van and that's how you'd get in trouble...

I've heard to put the keys in the trunk of the car since you always have access to the trunk release button in the cabin of the car.

Why do Americans call the handbrake the emergency brake? I don't understand. You use the brake everytime you are at a full standstill, and rarely in emergencies.

I've done this once before at a pretty well lit parking lot in my accord...didn't have any problems that time

in fairness, it's ALSO called the parking brake.

There's multiple names for the same things sometimes... like parking lights/hazard lights/running lights.

What ? I don't use it every time I come to a stop. What's the point of doing that ?

I got too drunk once and slept in my trunk. I dont know why either, its not like I wasn't allowed to sleep in my friends apartment. I just left his apartment drunk, and fell asleep in my trunk (Pathfinder, not a sedan dummy). I got up the next morning hung over and drove home.

Where your vehicle is might make a difference. If you're in the parking lot of the bar you'll probably be ok. In a ditch along the interstate is another matter.

Friend of mine went to sleep in his car at a bar, it was like 10pm, he had a few drinks and he decided that he'd sleep in his car untill he's sober...he was hoping to leave at like 2 or 3am. He started walking to his car and a cop stopped him said he'd better not get in a car. He told the cop he was just going to sleep in his car and cop said in California if your in posession of your car keys and within 15 feet of your car you can be arrested for a DUI. So the key's under the tire thing would really work. But then again the cop may just been an ass and lied...one reason I don't like cops is that they lie alot, I wish there was a law saying cops had to always tell the truth.

I was under the impression as long as the keys weren't in the ignition, you're good to go.

This exact incident happened in a Everybody Loves Raymond episode I saw last night. Ray's wife fell asleep with the keys in the ignition but then took a nap. She had to have a hearing to convince the judge she had no intent to drive but was only merely napping and didn't know where else to put her keys
