Lets say a dog is in your yard, your kids are playing, the dog isnt attended by the owner. Its *possible* its a stray, its possible some neighbors dog just got out. Regardless, can you whip out the trusty .44 and smoke the dog, or is that illegal?

Why not just call animal control? I'd be willing to bet you'd be held liable somehow unless you could prove it was threatening/attacking you somehow.

Well one of three things could be possible depending on your city laws:
1) You'd get charged with animal cruelty (most likely)
2) The owner of the dog, if there is one, could file a civil suit
3) Nothing, and you just throw out the dog with the day's trash. (unlikely)

AFAIK unless you are defending your children I don't think you have a valid reason to "put down" the dog.

It is illegal to fire a gun in city limits in this manner. It would have to be self defense otherwise you will get a ticket for firing your gun.

Don't know about the legality of killing an animal on your property.

I wish it wasn't. I have a few peacocks in the neighborhood that I wouldn't miss.

I think it's illegal, but unless there's someone to prosecute you, it's perfectly legal....

Generally, you cant discharge a firearm inside a US city

If you're on a farm, well, hell, no one is gonna know, anyway

Probably Discharging a weapon in City Limits, Cruelty to animals, just to get you started. Ownership of said weapon may be questioned, proximity of children when the weapon was discharged, blood alcohol level, may be called in question as well.

Hmm...you might be able to kill them. They're not specifically mentioned in the Migratory Bird Treaty Act (however, pigeons are, so it's illegal to kill pigeons). Assuming they are not protected under any local statutes, of course...

Use a paint ball gun, a pellet gun, or even pepper spray to make the dog go away. You really don't need to kill a stray dog just because it came into your yard. If it was foaming by the mouth and showing it's teeth then I'd say kill the damn thing.

Hell, we're not even allowed to shoot a damn slingshot as far as our city ordinances go. Just use a machete!

Ok, i wouldnt use a .44 Dont own one if fact. My options are
1) .22 rifle. Probably what I would use
2) 30-30. A viable option, if overkill
3) A SKS with 30 round clip and black synthetic stock. Considering the current conditions, I'd probably have the swat team out there, be taken in and charged as a terrorist. Definately not an option.
4) A bow. I'm not exactly Robin the Hood, but still an option.
5) My wife. Probably the most deadly of all listed weapons thus far. Probably the best option.

Bank robbey, murder, etc. are all illegal but unless there is someone there to prosecute, it's legal? Come on!

My father in law has 22 acres in a suburb of Cincinnati and had a dog with tags on chasing sheep (killed one). I pulled out his high powered rifle and shot it 100 yards away while it was running. We had to call the cops to report it but it was legal and the cop even commended me on my aim. Looks like Counter Strike helps for hunters.....

In my town it is againt the law to discharge a firearm in city limits. So unless the dog was about to kill you and it was a pretty good soze dog, i.e you could bot juts run inside, then MAYBE.

But do the non-stupid redneck thing and use your brain and just call animal control.

Discharging a firearm within the city limits is illegal except in self-defence. So unless the dog was attacking you, it is illegal to shoot it.
