Is it illegal to scan the cover of a book I own and publish it online?

how could that be illegal? covers of books are openly displayed and viewed both in the real world and online.

According to the so called 1%, just looking at their IP funny is enough to have the cuffs thrown on you. :p

In short, yes it is, but if it's for review purposes, etc. it falls under fair use.

Not if you have permission to reproduce from the copyright owner.

You do know why they call it a copyright, dontcha?

Copy.
Right.

The right to copy.

Just post it and wait for the "cease and desist" order.

Seriously.

Depends on your usage of said pic. If it's just to show of at ATOT no problem, or on a private homepage. But if you intend to use in business purpose you will need to get a permission.

The better question is whether or not the publisher cares if you publish it online for review purposes.

The answer is "no", especially if you are promoting the book or otherwise casting it in a positive light.

Since it's for a review, I think you're legally clear anyway, but who the hell has the money to fight corporate lawyers? Just put up the image, and take it down if someone bitches.

You'll be fine, the RIAA or WMG don't regulate books. If they did, it would be a different story. (no pun intended)
