So it's illegal to dl MP3. But what about recording songs from the radio? What if somebody took that song and converted into mp3?

The RIAA would argue that it is because you didn't pay for the copy of the song you just made yourself a digital/analog copy of.

It's a bunch of BS, I wouldn't worry about it. Just don't try to sell the music around.

as long as you don't redistribute it or charge for it and use it for personal use only then it is ok.

The RIAA would love to make it illegal to hum the tune of a song without paying them a $1.00 fee.

The Audio Home Recording Act gives you the right to record copies of any song for personal use. That means that you can record as many songs as you want off the radio and convert them into whatever format you want. If you distribute it, however, that's when it's illegal. As long as only you're going to listen to them, however, there's nothing illegal in that regardless of what the RIAA wants you to believe.

What?

What does a satellite reciever have to do with my personal home stereo?

What is a satellite reciever? lol..

How can they tell whether I'm recording the radio, or simply copying a tape? :p

You realize that that is not possible right? That radio is mass broadcasted by airwaves, a one-way signal? A trace requires a two-way signal.
Anyway, either you're an idiot or a troll. Either way, go 'way. :disgust:
