Is it illegal to put mailings in people's mailboxes?

I THINK it's illegal to put stuff in the acutal USPS mailboxes, but if you put the fliers under the flag, or in the paper box, as far as I'm aware it's legal.

Big misconception...

It is illegal to open someone's mailbox....you can hang fliers/pamphlets and what not from it *technically* if postage was paid....their domain is from the box to the ground (if on a pole).

I once put fliers in a neighborhood....all identical mailboxs and they had a little scroll on the pole, which I rolled up my pamphlet (christmas morning computer help) and stuck in.

I got a call and then a bill from the postmaster to pay (.10 cents I think each it came out to $10 or so)....for each I delivered.....I said 100 but the community had about 1000 houses....I can't find the letter, but it had the laws listed.

does anyone know how much it costs per flier (probably 1 sheet of paper tri-folded) to bulk mail?

i'll probably give the post office a call later.......just wondering if anyone knows off hand.

If you are that concerned about the legallity, then take the extra 30 steps to the front door and back and put it in their door handle.

Besides, people are more likely to take them inside and set them down if you do that.

If someone just tapes something to my mail box, I leave it there for it to blow away :-x

Law = can't put anything in mailboxes.

USPS has exclusive rights to what goes inside it. Anything else is unlawful.

It's why places liek fed-ex and ups cant put a thing in your mailbox.

For bulk mail you will have to have a min of 200 to go out. Also you have to register and pay for a bulk mail permit. I think you could expect to pay around 25 cents for each for postage. Also you will have to sort, weigh and bundle all your mail before you drop it off at the mail facility, where they will weigh it and and to see how much it cost you.

** my first job out of the Air Force was working in a junk mail shop. I learned really really fast that bulk mail is a huge pain in the ass. But I did get to meet Bill Phillips from EAS when our shop did all of his direct mail campaigns.
