Y not... think it is the best sound card nowadays and will be even better when more games support the x-ram feature. moreover, i need the front (optical and spdif) that this one has.
Not the best
I don't have high hopes for x-ram
You lose a lot of what makes this card good using a digital connection
The Xtreme music is over $100 less than what you're saying is a hot deal on this card
A lot people who get this card and similar ones don't have good enough output devices to justify the purchase imo
So why would I not buy this? I'd get the Xtreme music if I wanted an X-Fi and get the same sound quality minus the X-ram that seems like more of a gimmick than anything else at this point. If you think X-ram is going to take off, wait until it's below $150 like I mentioned.
I think spending twice as much on your speakers as your soundcard is a good starting point for budget, and beyond that, spend more on the speakers.
For headphones I'd say spend as much on the headphones as the soundcard, or spend more on the headphones.
If you have a nice set of headphones or one of the top comptuer speaker systems (or better), then I think it's reasonable to start spending this much on the soundcard as long as you know why you're getting it.
