Just a basic file server to use in a LAN. And is there anything I could use it for?

I have and old compaq sitting here waiting to be put to work

Cyrix chip 500mhz(?)
320mb RAM

Study up, get a distro or download it, and get started. It is not too hard to set up samba, and you can also use the box for a webserver, mailserver, Mysql or postgresql database, DNS on your LAN,.............
There are plenty of resources on the net for help. You just have to look around🙂

It's not the breeze windows is but it's not the bear it used to be either. Linux has come a long way in terms of novice use-ability. Mandrake's utilities make that distro pretty easy to install and configure. There are others that are probably easier but out of the ones I have played with, Mandrake seemed to be the most user friendly.

I agree on Mandrake probably being the easiest of the major distro's to setup and install for a linux novice (well aside from lindows, but you need to pay for that distro $99 too). Mandrake does everything you need and has some guides to help you out.

I run a web and file serer at home with Redhat 8. It's pretty easy to set up Samba (file server) if you just read a good guide. (there is an interface called Swat which can help you configure samba instead of manually editing the samba.conf file)
