I sold my laptop to a coworker not too long ago, and now the LCD backlight won't light up. So I'm guessin it's probably the backlight or the inverter that's defective.

Does anyone know how difficult it is to replace those parts in a Toshiba Satellite P30?
Apparently, the repair is $1000 at a local shop... way too high to be worth it :(

..some of the glass assys are built wit the backlights part of the overall display so the only way to replace a light is to replace the full glass assy (display). You'll have to find out what kind of display you have.

As IGBT says, a lot of those things are proprietary with the specific notebook brand. Replacement backlights are usually in the $125-$150 range, but putting them in requires some knowledge - and that is different with different OEMs. Assume you are no longer under warranty?

And, as you indicate, it could be the inverter as well. $1000 is a bit steep. You can replace the laptop completely for less than that - especially on E-Bay.
