Is it hard to add an AUX port to a stock stereo?

Just really depends on the make/model and the stereo invovled. Some radios take a "PIE" adapter that hooks up to the wiring harness.

I'm not 100% sure on the '05 X, but on the stock radio of the '05 Frontiers it'd be just as cheap/easy to replace the head unit with an aftermarket that included one than it would be to add in adapter to the stock unit.

I'd replace the stock unit dude.

I put a nice Pioneer in my X and love it. It's got the front AUX port, but I don't use it. It has USB so I just plug an 8GB stick in filled with MP3's and I'm good to go.

I hear where you're coming from. I like the stock 6 cd changer in my new car but there's no aftermarket adapter for an aux in. I'd like to hook up an MP3 player to it but it looks like I'd have to change out the stock deck to do that. I think if your car had the option for a cd changer unit that is external from the head unit, there's usually some sort of proprietary plug to hook up the aux cd changer and then you can get an adapter usually. With mine the changer is all built right into the double DIN had unit so no aux plugs on it. The other option is using an FM transmitter which can be kinda sucky in terms of SQ.

I wish all car makers did this from the factory, no more burned discs cluttering things up and no more unwanted discs in the landfill. Sadly, my stereo is part of the DIC display so replacing it requires an expensive ($185) adapter that only Metra sells..

Scosche makes one too, but it's not any cheaper. (Plus the Metra looks more stock)
FYI: you can get a major discount on the kit if you order a stereo from Crutchfield,.
