is it hard/possible to teach yourself how to play the drums?

i wanna start a band for my church but we don't have a drummer.
i took 8 years of private piano lessons, and taught myself guitar <--- (suck at it, but hey, it was self taught and i didn't put much time or effort into it. i can do the basic chords well enough). that's my music background.

anyway, i have access to a decent drum set, and i wanna learn. are there books, or video tapes, or anything of that sort? is it possible to learn myself? would i suck?

I heard drums are really hard to play, but I personally don't play them nor any other instrument so I really wouldn't know.

My cousin basically taught himself drums after he learnt guitar. He's pretty good at it. The hardest thing is being able to control your left and right hands independently from each other as well as your right foot.

It depends, for some ppl, drums come naturally, and for others, it's much harder...just give it a shot and keep practicing for at least a month and see how you do. You should be able to learn something no matter how little rhythm you have.

It came naturally for me. I've been playing for a few years.

Drumming will enable you to walk down the street while chewing gum, scratching your head, talking, and reading a Reader's Digest at the same time.

Drumming also helps become a better guitarist (better rhythm and timing). It can be hard to practice sometimes if there are people living around you.

hmmm, sounds promising...

for those of you that taught youselves, what kind of teaching/learning aid did you use? books, videos, etc?
i don't think i'll be able to find someone that already plays drums, so there'll be no live teacher.
