Help settle a debate - is "/" a forward slash, or is "\" a forward slash?

I say "/" is a foward slash because it "leans" forward, a person who is putting together an instruction manual says that "\" is a forward slash because the bottom part is "forward".

Who's right?

/ is simply slash, or more precisely forward slash. The forward is usually understood.

\ is backslash.

I love *NIX for using / in the (file) paths and still don't get why in DOS and Windows you've to use backslashes...

It's easier to type /usr/local/office52/so than D:\Programs\StarOffice\so.exe ;)

But they're correct: / is slash, \ is backslash.

I thought "/" is a forward slash, though I understand why that guy thought it was a backslash, because when you write it you move you pencil down and back. But I tend to look at it as going up and forward, thus I think of it as a forward slash. (Sorry, I'm just blabbering) ;)

DASH: -
FORWARD SLASH: /
BACKWARD SLASH: \

Booyah, you're right vi_edit. heh Whichever "makes more sense" doesn't matter; common rules dictate that the '/' is a forward slash.

What's his reasoning for believing "\" is a Forward Slash?

This is a backquote: `
This is a tilde: ~

\ is the backslash becuase MS uses it and MS is backwards ;) J/k~
\ is the backslash because / came first so it was the forward slash!

The way you write them would imply that "/" is a backslash, as you write it from top going back, and "\" a forward slash as you write it from top going forward, but such isn't the case...you just have to look at them as though they're leaning forward "/" and leaning back "\"...

I believe the backslash came about so that you could form \/ to be an "or" and /\ to be an "and" symbol...

Ask him to imagine falling forward.......does his head fall forward or his feet?
