i thought is nice because you can have a free slot due to this, would it slow down my computer alot vs those that don't have onboard component. i hope they gotten better since then because it was like a crawling turtle with those pc100 motherboard that i gotten in the past. would a quality motherboard like biostar, insert your favorite here, be any better with onboard VGA and Sound like AC97?

Well if you are looking for a good motherboard with intergrated sound and video, Nvidia just released their new Nforce motherboards. These boards provide both performance and value. They conme with 6-channel sound and a gefore 2 mx. Right now it's on par with the new via KT266A chipset in terms of performance. This seems like a great mobo with room to expand for the future if you wanted to.

Yeah.... just make sure if you buy integrated video, that it has an AGP slot so you can upgrade.

Other than that, onboard is fine until you can afford better.... :)

the ECS K7SEM is inexpensive and has onboard vga and ac97 sound.

Anand gave it a pretty good rating in a recent mobo round up as well

Depends on if your a gamer or a web surfer. For gamers, onboard Video and questionably audio is unacceptable. For web surfers, they are fine.

I have read this so many times here and other places! Please give me some tests or something to prove this is a correct statement.
A Savage chip on board running 4x agp with 64 megs memory dedicated to it works extremely well for anything.

If you are happy with that savage card, then you wouldn't believe your eyes when you saw a GeForce 2 or 3 GPU. If you want a way to prove it, run 3DMark2001 and see if you can even get it to run all the way through. And remember when you're running it, your not supposed to be looking at a slide show it's supposed to be flowing graphics. By the way, you can get 3dmark at madonion.com

but today's onboard VGA is already AGP capable of 2x or 4x, that is why there is no AGP slot :)
i believe generic brand like amptron, pc100 give intergrated component a bad name because of it's low quality motherboard. if onboard gets really good, we no longer have to buy them seperately costing us more in shipping and not isn't very economical either.
