Is it fair to non-smokers?

Do you think its fair for smokers to take smoke breaks during the day and talk with there friends when non-smokers are still working?

I'm a non-smoker and at my job it doesnt effect me at my position. However at some of the jobs were I work have sit down jobs. Then being on the phones all day and have limited walk around time. However if your a smoker at this job they get more breaks from the phones which seems unfair to the rest of the group. Taking more calls to cover when smokers are gone 3-4 times times a day taking 3-8 minutes?

Your thoughts?

One of the managers I work with at work is a smoker - and she takes breaks all the fvcking time!!! Arg - so annoying.

They're killing themselves so it's for a good cause. 😛

I'm jk but yeah it does tend to get pretty annoying.

Personally I don't think it's fair. Smokers here seem to have a free pass here to go outside or down to the parking garage to have a butt at their leisure.

Through the course of a work day it amounts to about a 1/2 hour of time.

Then again, I doubt any of them are posting on ATOT so I'm going to STFU. 😛

Oh boy, another thread bashing smokers. Don't you people ever get tired of hearing yourselves whine?

if people like you weren't around, then we wouldn't have to whine.

I should add this though: I do believe that (local) management is more inclined to hire non-smokers than smokers.

Do I think that is fair? Not necessarily but it's their prerogative (spelling?).

In the old days here, every worker smoked and they lit up right at their desks!

Now that would be something to see. Old times were CRAZY!!!!!!1111

What's stopping you from taking similar breaks? Go have a coffee, chat with a co-worker or whatver. Does your company have a policy that favors smokers when it comes to breaks?

OBVIOUSLY that's not fair -- the real question is, do you really care? I don't.

Well again it doesnt effect me at my current job so I dont care, however I was just curious to see how many people it does effect and there thoughts.

Did you get beat up a lot at school?

Funny. Looking for someone who shared your experiences?

Either quit bitching about smokers, or tell management. Like I said before, it's that simple.

I guess I misinterpreted your post. I agree with you, although the whole "tell management" side is the option for weenies.

If their productivity is so drastically affected by their smoking, then you have an opportunity to shine. If it doesn't affect their productivity then STFU.

On a slightly related note, Dr. Watson (of Watson & Crick DNA discovery fame) once said that part of the key to the success of British scientists was their propensity to take tea breaks. It gave them a chance to step away from their lab and discuss issues and theories with their colleagues that would often lead to new ideas.

Don't underestimate the smoke break!

The only thing that really bugs me about smokers at work is having to fight through a gauntlet of them huddled under the small roof at the entrance when it's raining/snowing/anything other than sunny outside.

I finally started taking non-smoke breaks back about 6 years ago. At first they threatened to fire me, but I showed them pictures I'd taken of employees on smoke breaks with a little logbook of their 'breaks' and they immediately backed down. Next company I was with got VERY angry and eventually declared the entire jobsite smoke-free to beat us...which worked out fine for us still. Going into education I imagine I won't have need to do it again, but I would in a heartbeat.

I don't mind people smoking on a few conditions:

1. I don't pay ANY Taxes that go to their healthcare (nor increased premiums on my health insurance to make up their drug-addicted difference).

2. I get the SAME treatment at work, including number and length of breaks.

3. I don't have to breath the smoke.

That's all I care about personally...meet those demands and you can become a chimney for all I care.

We canned a guy here for that very reason... he took "smoke breaks" galore during the day while everyone else was working.
