is it fair to compare an ECH/IEM against a full size headphone?

i know it shouldn't, since a full size headphone covers your whole ear and should intuitively provide better SQ (SQ = sound quality?).

however, I have been hearing the Shure E2x E3x being much better than conventional headphones, so that got me wondering that those tiny 'speaker' may actually be on the same level of playing field.

so, I got the Sennheiser CX300, and when compared to my old trustee HD545, the IEM did not stand a chance. quality and comfort wise, there is no comparison at all.

so, is it fair afterall to compare an IEM directly against a 'real' headphone?

They are kinda meant for different situations usually.

IEMs allow you to hear your music in a non-quiet environment. If you are in a quiet environment, the headcans are usually better.

Of course, it depends on price and if you hit that diminishing returns price/performance line.

A 100$ IEM vs. 100$ Headcan, in my experience, the headcan wins in overall SQ, but what good is that if you can't hear it in the busy train on your way home from work? Thats where the IEM is best.

I would take a AKG 601, Grado SR225, Senn 595, Beyer DT990 over an E5C in terms of sound quality any day. In terms of my commute, thats where I might look into the IEM.

Now, a 1000$ IEM vs. 400$ headphone, I don't know for certain as I have never tried that.

UE10's definitely more accurate in the lower frequencies and vocals seem to have natural timbre where some cans can color sounds in this range.

I use Ultrasone cans that are pretty accurate but cannot produce infrasound like the UE10's can. As a matter of fact the UE10's can produce waves that tickle the spine and give the sensation of a neural implant!

Finally IEM's are MUCH better if you require mobility whether it's dancing around on a stage or just jogging with your PMP. 🙂
