Is it expensive

checked all the fuses, they seemed fine.

Warranty is over in 100 miles. Deductible is $75 (extended warranty from carmax).

I need the car this week. Carmax is 40 miles from my house.
I have 100 miles left on my warranty

I can either not drive it and take it into carmax and be without a car for who knows how long or fix it myself.
If it is going to cost me hundreds of dollars I'll take it in, but if it is going to cost me $100 I'll do it myself.
 
I have a leak in the compressor. New compressor costs ~$500 so I decided $30 Walmart freon bottles every other summer was more worthwhile.
 
Blah I guess there is no way of knowing what exactly is wrong.

I checked all the fuses, they are fine.
Defrost/AC do not work. They just blow air.
The gas for the AC is fine too.

Chances are high that's a >$100 problem.

cost me 850 last summer to fix my car AC . . . some pipe had to be replaced and since it was a 84 mercedes . . parts cost me a leg and a half.
 
how to see what problem is....
Go to walmart and buy an AC pressure tester. See if your system still has refridgerant in it. If not, buy 6 cans of refridgerant, and a can of ac leak sealer and fill it. If the leak is small, this will usually fix it. It larger leak, probably need replacement parts.
AC will take all 6 cans, if completely empty. Do not over fill.

Once filler, see how long car runs till AC stops working again... if less than 3 months, get fixed. 3-5 months... just repeat process every summer.
 
if it's the part that's expensive, try searching the junkyards online. I bought a $300 compressor (I think that's what it was) for $75 bucks and the guy guaranteed it for a year, which wasn't even necessary because it worked chingon, I never had a problem

Find someone who will tow it there for cheap. It may be well worth the cost of towing. With labor included, AC repairs can cost a shade over a grand.
 
That depends entirely on what is wrong with it.

Also, cost to fix may vary greatly from different makes/models. Cost to replace a compressor on a Pontiac Grand Am would be far cheaper than on a BMW 5-series.
 
I would try to get it to your waranty place. If it is older than 1992 or so it will be an R12 system for which freon cost about $60/pound and most vehicles need about 2.5 pounds. If it is newer then you might be ok.

Did you check your belts and make sure the A/C clutch is still engaging?

Good luck last time I had AC work done it took all day and cost about $250

It wouldn't cool worth a damn. You need 3 tonnes minimum to cool a car. There is no way a car electrical system can run a 3t tin can. That's why they use open belt drive and you can feel the draw on a four banger. Really underpowered cars will have a switch under the accelerator pedal that disengages the clutch on the compressor to allow maximum drive power under WOT acceleration for passing and going up steep hills etc.
 
i paid $1300 last summer to re-do the A/C in my wife's van. now the belts keep breaking 🙁
if i get a gigantic bonus this summer, i might just sell the stupid thing to avoid dealing with fixing the A/C again, but that probably won't happen, so i'll have to take it to another shop to get it fixed AGAIN 🙁
