...without being mistaken for being flirtatious? I'm pretty sure the answer is no but I just want to confirm.

Flirtatious? I thought the word you were going to use was gay.

Straight guys don't comment on women's earrings...PERIOD

If you can comment on shoes, dresses, and other clothing without coming off as flirtatious, you can make the earrings work. I've managed all but the earrings before--never had the occasion to test that one.

Really? I suppose it depends on the comment, anyways. I thought women liked to be complemented and noticed and stuff. But of course, gay people are stereotypically into fashion as well. Isn't there a middle ground between "Nice earrings. Let's fuck." and "Oh my god Rachel those amethyst studs complement your blouse so fabulously!"?

I have.

I was walking by two women who were talking about their earrings. One stopped me to ask a question. I answered it, smiled at the nice older lady who is always saying I remind her of her son, and said, "Those are nice earrings, by the way. My mother had a pair just like them."

Small talk, bitches!

The earrings in question were small skull-and-crossbone studs, fwiw.

Of course it's possible. I don't do it because I don't like earrings, but it's very possible.

No it's not.

Just talking to a female that you don't know generally comes off as 'flirtatious.' Women are vain, crazy, and think all men that make contact with them are after sex.

/general observation

What if it's someone I know? Say, a study partner. Is that the point at which it becomes sexual harassment?

Quite seriously, it's goddamn disturbing how much the 'treat a woman like dirt to gain her affection' gag is actually true.

Don't do anything with your 'study partner' except study. Act as if she is completely asexual. If she wants anything to do with you, you'll know.

Do anything that can be [mis]construed as 'coming on to her' (not with your penis; the other way), and nine times out of ten, you're a creep. I don't care if you look like George Clooney fucked Brad Pitt; expose your non-sterile side and you're fuckin' done for.

Also, we have an L&R forum for getting terrible romantic advice, you know.

I comment on earrings all the time, females like to be complemented, weather it be on their hair, makeup, shoes, outfit, earrings, pretty much anything. Or you can be one of those macho straight guys who feels it's gay to comment on anything a female has on. Generally females prefer guys like I mentioned though. As long as you don't sound like Greg's friend on Dharma & Greg when you compliment her earrings you'll be fine.

"Wow, I like your earrings/perfume/necklace! What is it called?"
She will think you are gay or it's for your girlfriend.

Or you could say it in a way where you don't look gay and don't sound like you're asking so you can get it for your GF. Female's are very good at picking up on when a guy's flirting with them. Females like to be flirted with, and a few well placed complement's will be the 1st step towards getting a date. Unless you're a tall muscular hunk, chances are asking a woman on a date without some sort of compliments first will result in you getting shot the hell down.

A compliment is the perfect way to break the ice, if a guy can't give a female one without coming off as gay there probably isn't much hope for them.
