Is it even worth it to get DDR3 at all yet?

Is this gonna be like DDR2, and take 1-2 years to get good?

I mean, approximately the time that AM2 and C2Ds came out is when ddr2 started getting good..

The prices went to a decent point, the speeds went up to 800, then 1066, etc.. cas latencies were soon comparable.

What about ddr3?

I mean, I believe after reading some benchmarks ddr2-1066 cas 5 is still a good bit faster than ddr3-1500 cas 8..

id wait for ddr3 to get mainstream before jumping into it. ddr3-1500 is good but at a cas or 8 it really doesnt seem worth it to me.

i'd say this winter/next year will be the better time to, when decent motherboards and the kinks/prices have gone down.

Not two years, but yes its a safe bet that it will take at least six months for DDR3 to "get good".

Its not necessarily that DDR3 won't be as fast or faster than DDR2 three months from now, its that you'll have to spend a LOT more on DDR3 to get the same performance, and even MORE than that to get better performance.

Spending 100% more money to get equal performance, or 200% more to get 25% more performance isn't really my idea of an equitable exchange of value.

I was thinking about going to the Asus P5K3 board which is suppose to have native DDR3 1333. But it sounds like I would be better just getting the P5K board with some DDR2 1066 memory?

Wait for the X38 chipset mobos - they should be out soon.

Or wait another couple of months for the new NVidia chipsets.

Unless you run sandra all day that AT review shows abysmal performance increases.

Double the price for 3-4fps?

Not to mention AT kind of dropped the ball on that review, they dont even show DDR2 results on anything but synthetics. However you can gauge from the near nil increases from DDR3-800 to DDR3-2000 that DDR2 performance is probably right in line with it.

Right now, DDR3 :thumbsdown:

Maybe X38 will help.

Go with DDR2 and, if you're looking at Asus boards, the P5K-E, it has every feature the deluxe has except for a second ethernet port.
