Is it essential to modify the L6, L3, and L4 to overclock TBirds Socket A?

I just recently got an Abit KT7A for a buddy and it won't past 1066Mhz on a chip that went 1300Mhz on an Abit KT7. I first connected all L1 and it ran from 1Ghz to 1.3Ghz with default voltage. The bus speed won't even go beyond 100 or it won't boot. So he got the KT7A, now it won't boot at all using user defind settings. Only use board defined settings at 8X133. The chip is default for 10X100@1.75V. So my question is, is it essential to modify all L1, L3, L4, and L6 to get this chip to 1.3Ghz on this Abit KT7A board.
Thanks for the help.

You should not have this kind of trouble. What you do need to do, is make sure that when you lower the multiplier, that you reboot first with the lowered multiplier and 100FSB. Make sure that ALL other BIOS options are default with this boot, no HSTCLK+PCICLK for memory. After the successful BOOT at 100 with defaults, select the 133/33 BIOS option (do not pick 133/44) and all should be good if your memory can run 133.

If DaddyG's sugestion does'nt quite work, i'd crank the cpu voltage up to max too.

<< You will have to close all L7 bridges to get higher core voltage. >>

i thought you didnt have to if your motherboard allowed voltage changes?

Trashman, when you set the Vcore higher in your BIOS, the cpu stills begins to initialize at the default voltage set by the L7 bridges. Remember, all BIOS options are stored in CMOS memory. ONLY the cpu can read these values from CMOS and store them in special hardware registers. When your system is OCed, its better to get the Vcore up high as soon as possible during the system initialization process.
