Is it easy to upgrade to a larger hdd on xbox 360 elite?

So I'm thinking of buying a modded and banned xbox 360 elite for cheap. but it does not come with a hard drive. Then I thought of getting a 20gig kit off ebay (or for sale forum here hopefully) and then replacing it with my own 160g drive. We have a ton of drives laying around here that I could probably just use. I'd just be copying games onto the drive for better gameplay speed and noise. And I don't really care about xbox live b/c I won't play online, I'm too cheap to pay for it 🙂
So is this easy to do?

you need a specific kind of WD drive and the limit is 120gb no matter what size it is (ie- a 320gb hdd will only show 120gb available). Possibly higher if they dump the 250gb key.

As said, you can't use any drive and pray it works. You must use a specific one, get the proper firmware on there, and hope it all wasn't a huge waste of time. Word on the street is that all non MS drives won't function after the next update. So if you do this, you'll have to remember to not update. Won't be a huge loss since it won't be able to get on live, but when they release games that require the new update you couldn't play them on that system with the drive still working.

So, yes it's possible but it's definitely not worth the trouble IMO

Thanks everyone for the info. I just figured I could toss a 120-160gb sata drive in the shell and format it properly and it would work, I just could not go online with it. I guess that is not the case.
It's kind of lame by MS, but I guess that's how they make their money charging $120 for a hard drive worth $40.
