is it easy to damage speakers?

I have very powerful speakers with a built in amp (EV SonicXS) and I'm worried about blowing them out because I noticed something perculiar:
using them on my old Turtle Beach Santa Cruz, they didn't get CRAZY loud, but now using them on some integrated audio on an HP oem motherboard, they do get CRAZY loud.

So is there likely to be some kind of circuitry in the built-in amp that protects it from overpowering the speakers no matter how strong the input signal is

you shouldn't be able to damage the speakers with their built in amp - it shouldn't be capable of providing enough power to destroy them.

giving them an input signal that is too large should just cause clipping and major distortion.

Who knows, though, its possible that they put an amp in there that could blow the speakers. I'm talking theory, I can't speak to your speaker setup.

Don't worry, they won't crap out on you if you take care of them. When you start hearing distortion/noise (on the speaker level, not from a distored source (like a crappy screener)) that isn't there when you have it turned down; then I'd turn it down a bit. But until then crank it up. Since its a kit system (assuming it is well made), they've likely made it impossible to blow the speakers with the built-in amp.

The change in sound level is likely just because your onboard sound is sending move voltage/amps so the receiver thinks "ok this needs to be louder." You can just adjust for this by turning down the volume.
