Is it difficult to get 2 cell phones to be the same phone number?

i don't think both could hold a conversation as if it were a shared line.. the cell towers would probably make both ring, this is somewhat common after switching to a new phone as the old phone can be used for 911 calls... but i think the tower could pick one in the event both picked up to a call (if both could even ring in the first place)... both getting voicemail notification can happen though.

I don't think it's possible, but I can see why someone might want to do that. People might not need a cell phone except to have one in each car for emergencies. If you could do that, you'd only need to pay for one line of service while having multiple phones usable.

How about this, do they make a phone that can have 2 SIM cards at once? Basically, I have a work phone and a personal phone and I'm tired of carrying 2 phones. If I could have one phone that allowed me to make and receive calls from both numbers, that would be great.

phone calls are point to point.

I'm not a cell phone guy but what the OP is posturing is impossible in my mind. You'd have to have the call terminate in some kind of switching gear and then that switching gear ring/connect both phones.

*Some* carriers and phones permit multiple lines on one cell phone. Call your carrier for more information.

As for the OP... be more specific. With that little detail, the only possible answer is "no, it cannot be done".

worst idea i've ever heard, humor me on your reasoning.

Family with children who are only allowed to use the phone for "emergency" purposes? (vs. the families who believe that their pre-k daughter needs her own phone to keep in contact with the other kids in her pre-school class)

Ya. If your talking GSM, assuming a duped SIM, the second phone won't be able to register on the networks MSC.

If your talking VZW, assuming a duped IMEI (I think that's equivalent of stealing satellite), the same thing will happen. Both can't register.

In either situation, it would generate a flag on the carriers network. They would know, FTL.

How about call forwarding, FTW.

So get a phone that's configured for emergency/authorized use only. That's no reason to have a 'duplicate' phone on any network.

Can't do it, the networks are setup for one phone per number.

Back in the day though, you could have two numbers per phone, I'm sure you still can, just have to talk to your carrier about it. With GSM phones it'd be as simple as swapping the SIM card, I haven't seen any with two slots though.
