Is it dead? or dying? or just overheating?

I don't know what this problem, when it happens, I get a quik blink on the monitor and then part of my desktop goes grainy, and then I get grainy strips down the length of my monitor, 3d apps give heavy artifacts and then capput, it locks up. is this fixable with a aftermarket cooler? I have a NV silencer but it is not making good contact with the vram and also I used the original thermal pads that came with the card and they say exposed to air for about 2-3 months before I used them. am I SOL or is this fixable?

thanks

I could only get a temp from the GPU they were low;

idle = 51-53
ambient = 38-40

load was never higher than 63 on the core and 44 ambient, I had to take a bit off the copper base that covered the vram...took a bit too much off I think. There was an tiny little gap between the copper and the vram, so rather than use the caremique that I originaly used I reused the thermal pads that the card originally came with. the pads were almost loose after assembled, I could slide it out. so a week goes by and I got the symptoms I posted above.
But it comes and it goes saturday was the original problem but saturday night I gamed all night with no problem at all, then sunday the same. tuesday night it happened again. Any ideas?

You should replace your NV Silencer... It sounds like you damaged it, and it isn't working properly anymore. I'm not sure what you mean by you "had to take a bit off the copper base". I had an NV Silencer on my eVGA 6800GT, and it fit perfectly out of the box.

Those are the core temps, not the RAM. I think his NV SIlencer isn't making correct contact with the RAM, which is causing the problem.

...at least try putting the stock cooler back on.

I gave that away on another forum to a user who broke theirs trying to install a NV silencer, but I get home today from work and my whole system is messed up, I have a different vid card in and I am getting lockups and all the other issues without artifacts, I am starting to think that it is not a video problem. is there anything else that can cause artifacts?
