Is it Dangerous to run a P2-400 without a fan?

I have an old motherboard (well dunno how old it is as I was given it), but it had a P3 450 attached to it. It is the old Katmai core and it does not have a fan, just a dirty big heatsink on it and no evidence that a fan was attached at all.

It doesn't answer your question directly, but what I'm trying to say is 'possibly'. I'd bang a fan on it anyway for the very limited cost of such items and just for safety. it won't do any harm.

Yah I was surprised when I saw my dad's Dell 450 came with just a big ass h/s and no fan, and yes, it was pretty dan hot to touch. I would, at the very least, buy a blower and strap it somewhere in the case so that it is blowing some air over the h/s, IMHO.

How much is a decent heatsink & fan over there? $10?

A P2 fan is only about £6 over here in the UK.

Get one, it'll run smoother.

Nah , all the computers at my school have PII 450's and they just have huge heatsinks on them. I would problebly just get a fan for the hell of it though :p

my dad's Dell PII 233 just has a heatsink and an 80mm fan behind it sucking air through it. runs fine, but very hot. i'd just buy a cheap 60mm fan and strap it on with some zip-ties

A 400 can handle it easily. I've got a Gateway P3 666 with no fan.

Oh no, it's the noise loving gang. Most CPU's do not require active cooling under most conditions. If you have one that is at running at a frequency which is the limit of its design range on the equator with no air conditioning it prolly would be a good idea but I've never had a problem running without one. Current rig is a C533 running at 825 MHz. It has a small Pentium era heatsink and a switched CPU fan that I turn on during the summer when gaming. For intensive use at 897 it requires the fan on, otherwise the ps one does the job of extracting warm air. Whether that one is required I still have not tested. For your P2-400 it would help to know what quality and range it came from -like was Intel cranking out chips which they would toss in the 600 bin at the time or were most of them 300 and 400 was a stretch? The ol' finger test is pretty reliable too. Or, just run the darn thing and if it doesn't lock up then don't worry about it unless you plan on using it beyond the year 2010 and are worried about shortening its life.

As others have said, most PII branded systems do not have CPU fans and they run just fine. But if it makes you feel better, do as others have suggested and put a fan on it.

My Pentium II 400(Sl2S7 Malay) did not have fans attached to the heatsink. I remember those times being extremely quiet:Q. Oh to have a quiet computer again.
