I assume they have all the no smoking and turn your car off signs for a reason. :) I don't know what the exact problem could be, but please turn your car off.

I usually run my car and smoke cigarettes when I'm gassing up.

I'll also try to top my car off as much as possible. Sometimes it leaks.

By its nature, a gas station can have areas where flamible fumes can build up from such sources as spills and leaky filling hoses and nozzels. A parked, running car stands more of a chance to produce enough heat to ignite such gas pockets. Sourced include hot exhast manifolds and backfires.

Your car may be in great shape, but it's not a particularly burdensome saftey reg to require turning off all cars while filling up, just to reduce the risk posed by someone's faulty car. Many localities also forbid cell phone use near a gas pump because there have been reports of ignitions caused by radio interaction with the electronics in modern gas pumps. Again, it's not likely, but it's too easy to eliminate the potential hazzard.

<<Jeffery Morrison of the Opp Fire Department said there are any number of ways a fire can start at a gas pump.

Static electricity from a running car, an overflowing gas tank or sparks from a backfire could start a fire at a gas pump.>>

If I blow up the city, then oh well, that's what happens. When it's -50F outside, I'll leave my car running when I get gas, no matter what anyone tells me.

I leave mine running at times too. When it's 95 outside and the kids are inside I leave it on for the A/C.

I saw a lady filling up one time that left her car on as she was getting gas and when she went in to pay for it her little kid put it in gear and it smashed into the store. I don't think she does that anymore.

Oh, for f*cks sake. It takes about 5 to 7 minutes max to pump your gas and pay for it. A car is insulated enough to retain its heat/cold for at least that long - especially when you're under a canopy away from the sun.

There's no legitimate excuse to leave the car running while pumping gas.

Maybe a well-built car will be insulated, but not my car :)

Aside from it may be illegal in your state and the slight risks of explosion, somebody stealing your car, or some kid putting it in gear, there's probably not much serious risk.
I guess it's pretty pointless either way.
