Is it common to have a little static in a guitar amp?

Just started learning guitar ...

Got a new amp yesterday .. Vox tube hybird

When you turn it on... regarless is anything is plugged in or
if the volume is turned up or not...

there's a little bit of static coming out of the speaker

It's pretty faint .. about as loud as a computer fan..

maybe 30 dbA or less.

Is this normal or not good?

Youre fine, my 25w fender amp does the same thing. It could also be your pickups though if they're not high quality.

Dunno if its normal or not, but is the static NOISE? or more of a buzz? There may be some DC output.

Well it kinda depends what you mean by static... but yeah... you're always going to get SOME static. They make stomp boxes that are like a noise filter to quiet things down a bit, but it's still there. Don't fret... get it? har har har :D

It does it regardless if a guitar is plugged in... and not dependent on volume either
If you turn the amp all the way up the static is still very faint

Its just faint static ... like if you turned up your stereo all the way with no music
or if you put your car radio on in between stations ... but it's very faint.

let me ask you a couple questions.

Does this amp have a clean and an overdrive/distortion channel?
Does it make noise on both channels?
Does it sound more like a hiss or a hum?

Turn it up real loud, then put your butt up against the speakers and get a massage with the first few bars of "Smoke on the Water"

static bad, buzz ok.

Turn off all the electronic stuff in your house, put the amp on the clean channel and turn the gain down. Crank the volume and you should not hear static or buzz.

Its not a hum ... and it doesn't depend on volume or gain
Its very faint with either turned all the way up or all the way down.

Its light static (like when you cue a record on a turntable before the music comes on)

High gain pickups are going to get some noise in them- especially with anything that overdrives the server like a distortion pedal or a compressor. If it gets bad, you can get a noise suppresor pedal. BOSS makes the one I use, and it's probably my favorite pedal :) I use a custom made Yardbox, and the vintage components in it make NASTY buzz when you play on a guitar with hot pickups. The Boss pedal kills that buzz without any loss of signal. Highly recommended.

This will happen to the highest quality pickups. There's a lot of factors involved in that, so there's not one cause. Improper grounding on the pickups CAN be a cause though.

Yeah...basically. Its not worth worrying about. Plugs, pickups, AMP quality, grounding. Ehh...just turn the distortion on and scream really loud...

DON'T LISTEN TO THESE PEOPLE... none of them have ever played an amplifier let alone a song on a guitar. no the hum is not normal. the amp buzz/fuzz statically is not normal. i personally have it in my bassman clone, and can't fine out wtf it is. an amp shouldn't sound like a tv stuck on a dead channel.

Welcome to the forums. If you notice, this thread hasn't been responded to for 13 years, so I doubt the problem still exists.

mine goes away when i tap on a specific capacitor. it has to warm up for about 5-10 minutes, then i hit this capacitor and it stops the fuzz. most likely its a bad cap in mine.
