is it better to use gcc 3 or gcc 2.95?

Depends on what for. gcc 3 is still considered new and unproven, many things like the Linux kernel can have problem with 3.

But, I've compiled a kernel on Alpha with 3 and it worked fine so you just have to try and see on a case by case basis =)
