Is it better to have a Router/Modem or Router with a seperate Modem.

I bought a Linksys WRT54GS router thinking it had a built in modem. My mistake.

Is is best to have a Router/Modem or a Router and a seperate modem. If the latter, is it best to go with an internal DSL or external DSL modem.

So many questions so little time. 🙂

if you have a separate modem/router -- you can upgrade the dsl standard if that ever happens (in transition from adsl1 to adsl2 where I am)
also if one breaks you still have the other

on the flip side - takes up more power/space
might be harder to configure due to different menu systems depending on your expertise

I've got similar settings at both home and at work. We run Internet - Modem - Router and it works fine. There's no visible performance loss and there's room for upgrade as well 🙂

Router will allow you to use DSL, CABLE, or perhaps newer technologies down the road. A combo unit may lock you into one format.

Besides being in one plastic Box there is No advantage what so ever to a Combo.

On the other hand none of the Routers in the Combos is as good as a recent Stand alone Router.

As mentioned above having a combo reduces your over all flexibility to upgrade and improve your Network.

imho i like having 2 seperate units.... id rather have a good quality router i know how to use and is easy to use because i am always redoing the port forwarding and crap.... custom dhcp and all those other goodies, im a control friek.... lol

There is me thinking this was simple. Okay. I'm going to try 2 options. I've ordered the (rightly or wrongly) Netgear DG834GT. I already have the SpeedTouch 330 Modem from the ISP and as you know the Linksys WRT54GS router. I'll get another ADSL modem with a CAT5 connection so then I'll try both methods (good steep leaning curve) 🙂 and report back with any findings if any on the speed etc. Basic stuff really.

Can't tell you how long I have waited for Broadband...well I can...it's 5 years, 1 month and 3 weeks. 🙂

Thanks for all you help guyz I'm sure to be posing again when nothing works... 😀
