I have 4 systems at about 1 ghz at home. I'm going to turn one of them into a dedicated game server. Should I make the fastest system the server and play on the slower machines or the otherway around?

Use the faster machines on the clients.

If the server is dedicated it doesnt need a lot of power since it doesn't have to render anything.

yep you can, for instance, run a pretty decent 16 person server on a PIII 500.

Another option for you if you're using 2000/XP: run your dedicated server on one of the client machines but bump it's process priority up using task manager, then run your client game on the same machine. With this method you'll get NO slowdown or lag on that machine on either process.

Most game servers don't need a really fast CPU to host a game with a lot of people. However, there are some other games, when hosting that eat 100% of the CPU and those games would tend to need a better CPU. What games are you trying to run?

I'm going to run Warcraft 3, Unreal 2K3, Half Life/Counter strike, and Doom 3 when it comes out.
