somethings wont work right/well with a proxy servers, as far as performance, if anything it would degrade with a proxy, if ur using dsl/cable look into one of those broadband router/switches if you want the betetr solution.. well jus my 2cents....

There are two reasons somethings don't work right with a proxy, the proxy software sucks or the person doesn't know how to configure the proxy properly. A proxy server can give you better perform depending on the proxy you use. I use Proxy 2.0 and it is AWESOME! It is made for a corporation and is pretty expensive but it rocks! The reason to use proxy software to connect to the net instead of using ICS is because ICS has been known to be unstable. But if it is working alright for you then leave it be. I would recommend using something like a router though because of the added security. Another benefit of a router is that you don't have to have a dedicated machine powered on to connect to the net. ;)

It can slow down pings if your proxy server can't handle the load (my isp comes to mind) but I don't have to go through a proxy anymore and it's a lot faster (the internet) and my pings are actually reasonable...

"Better" would be, at least in Proxy 2.0, you have the ablitiy to enable active caching where the proxy server goes out and makes sure all the cache objects are updated frequently. Proxy keeps track of the cache object and updates them at low times of internet use (let's say at night). So the next time you visit web sites that you frequent often, you don't have to download the entire page. A LOT of the web page will be pulled from the Proxy server's cache (if not all). ;)

my pings are ok..hitting yahoo with pings in low 20's but...

mainly...does going through a proxy slow down my internet connection...

also..why is it that i need to go through the proxy to get to certain sites..like roxio.com

if i dont have the proxy enabled i can never open that site...but with proxy enabled...works fine...any ideas?

thanks
