Is it bad to run every day?

I've been running about 3 miles each day for the past 3 weeks or so while trying to minimize the number of days I do not run. For those of you who run a lot, is it better to allow a day of rest each day after I run or is it ok to run every day? I've been hearing mixed

Also, do most people run for distance or for overall time exercised?

I would have posted this over at geek fitness, but there doesn't seem to be much activity over there. I appreciate any advice you could give. Thanks.

I prefer to run for distance, which ends up being a long time because fast running isn't one of my strong points...

Its also probably not a good idea to run every day. This is entirely dependent upon how much you sleep, how long you run each day and whether its outside vs. on a treadmill. The point is you don't want to overtrain which will put you on the fast track for an injury (running on a treadmill is lower impact vs. outdoors). I know plenty of people who do - you just have to pay attention to your limits.

moderation... if you are running so much one day (i.e. you run 10 miles one day, different from normal) you would wanna take a day off, but if you are running within your limits than everyday doesnt hurt.

In the short term its not so bad, but from what I've heard, people who run all their life get pretty bad joint problems later on in life. make sure you dont get shin splints either

I think it is bad to run any day.

Of course I'm fat and out of shape so I'm sure its not the opinion you were looking for.

if you are just starting out I would not recommend running every day. i have been running 5-6 days a week, around 4km per day for the last year and a half. during some of that time I regret that I ran so much, had some knee problems that I thought would never go away but they eventually did. so definately watch yourself. i think after a while your body will build up to be able to handle it every day though. i run 7 times a week sometimes and it is no problem now.

Not an expert here, but I've always known it to be better if you run a bit like, every other day, then maybe do some other stuff on the "off days"... just to get the blood flowing.

But if you feel fine doing it... not much of a reason to stop, eh?

I'd really only do 5 days a week unless you mix it up with some different types of training - biking, swimming, basketball, ect. There's no clear cut formula for predicting injury, but running every single day can lead to tendonitis and stress fractures.

You need to give your muscles and connective tissue (and your brain!) a break every now and then.
