i am planning to get two additional SATA HDs....now i realize on my dfi ultra d i only have TWO independent SATA channels (each with a primary and secondary).

Now i know from old IDE times that you never should put a slave/master on ONE channel.....but what about SATA ?

Is it better to run each HD on its own channel (would make a max TWO hds for max performance)...or does SATA provide enough bandwidth that i can plug 4 HDs in my ports and dont need to be concerned even if then always two HDs would be on ONE channel ?

thanks

btw. i am not talking about RAID...i just want the optimal configuration w/ multiple HDs..

You can't* put more than one SATA drive on a SATA channel. Two ports = two drives. Get a PCI or PCIe SATA controller card if you need to install more drives.

*Well, you can, but I think that's coming as part of SATA 2.0 and/or SAS.

since i have a dfi nf4 lanparty ultra - i have four connectors, ASSUMING this means 4 ports ?

So..those four ports are totally independent and it doesnt matter how many HDs i plug on what port ? (assuming i only have ONE onboard SATA controller and yes, of course ONE HD per port ;)

For some reason i could've sworn i read something about "sata channels" and be careful to have drives on its own sata channel/controller....but if its like each port is independent anyway i guess this does not apply ?

your dfi board has 4 ports which means 4 sata channels. You can plug in 4 sata drives with each one using its own channel.

Exactly, each port only support 1 device - meaning 4 port 4 device, not 4 port 8 device.
