pull out the battery if you're going to leave it on for that long Li-ion batteries loose some recharging time if constantly.

I have left my Dell I8100 on for the past two months straight. It has never once been shut off. It's my desktop replacement :) It doesn't go to standby, doesn't shut off the hard drive, doesn't go into hibernation. Although I do let it auto turn off the lcd when it's not in use which is not often :) Yeah as suggested, if you're going to leave the laptop on using an AC adapter, make sure the battery is not in. For me, I have the battery halfway in so that it doesn't recharge. And to this day, it still holds 100% charge :)

Edit: Forgot to mention that I haven't had a problem that wasn't winxp's fault. Other than that, it's still running like a champ :D

I've kept my Compaq K6-2+ 450MHz going constantly, almost 24/7, for.... I don't know... 3 years running now, almost? They get hot, but they're designed to withstand it. Do what the others said and take out your battery. Not only does the battery get damaged, but on mine at least, it gets hotter if the battery is in. Maybe this is just when the battery is charging though. Definitely set your LCD to turn off after like 5 minutes, those are often the first things to go on a laptop, and they have a definite expected lifetime!! (I think on the order of 10,000 hours... better ones are like 20,000 IIRC)

not if its properly ventilated (ie don't leave it setting on a comforter on your bed and such)

i test stuff where i work

i ran 6 compaq lappy's 24/7 for about 6 weeks straight, running distributed computing programs (use 100% of the cpu/full speed) and they were fine, no problems

oh, these were new p3 667 and 933 Mhz models (give or take a few Hz, new pc's anyway)

My laptop is on at work for my whole shift and then on again at home until I go abck to work. I used to crunch Genome@home which seemed to heat things up alot so I quit doing that.

aphexII, I leave my laptop running 24/7 all the time w/ the battery installed. I've had it since Sept/01 and have yet to notice any problems. As for having the battery in/out, I have no opinion on the longevity as my battery is plugged in 24/7; Hope this helps :)

Thanks for the tip on the battery. I've got this laptop plugged in at all times and I never knew that about longevity. I just pulled the battery out and put it away until I need it.
