is it bad news if the interview only lasted 15 minutes?

actually maybe not even that

it was scheduled for 30 minutes per candidate

the first candidate was in and out in 5 minutes.. told me he has no chance of getting it

I lasted longer but there were another candidate after me who thinks he did well
I don't know how long he was in there for

I asked him three questions at the end but afterwards, the interview ended.

I did make some slight errors like not coming up with the question.. there was an uncomfortable pause for 30 seconds because I completely forgot what I was going to ask
I also made some other errors like giving dumb answers to his questions, etc.

should I send him a 'thank you' note ? (via email)
even if he said he will make the decision by the afternoon?
will it have any impact?

My last interview was two hours. It wasn't supposed to be, but I bet that interviewer dreads asking future candidates "do you have any questions for me?"

It doesn't sound like they digged ya, but you could get surprised. I'd be persistant. Keep your name in front of them, call and just say, that you appreciate that they took the time to consider you, and tell them what a great company it is, and how much you would enjoy working there. :)

just wait outside and when the guy comes out ask him if you got the job. if he says its not decided yet which he will just say okay, the last time i went thru this i didnt get it so raped the guy and got into some trouble, didnt want that to happen again so just checking.

Generally I've been out of most interviews well before the allocated time but this doesn't necessarily mean it's a bad thing. However, as you forgot your questions and made a few mistakes then that will have an impact.

Send a thank you note anyway and keep your fingers crossed - if nothing else, remember the experience for the next one

I had a college interview and it lasted less time than scheduled, I was slightly worried but got an offer in the end.
I think it just depends, and if it's not *too* short, like say 5 minutes, then you can't realy be sure.

No, if it was shorter than allocated, it does not mean you didn't get hired. If they like you, you're hired.

Last potential client I talked with had 2 hrs blocked out.

Done in 15 minutes.

Slot was mine to lose and I took it.

Higher billing rate.

Much depends on the work qualifications and their needs.

I had a 10 minute interview scheduled for 30, they hired me later that day. When I asked about the length, they said my skills and experience and personality were so far ahead of anyone else they interviewed that there was no point in making it longer. I was their last interviewee that day.

So no, it's not always bad.

I can never judge the result from interviews - I know the only way to get good at it is to go to lots of them because no matter how much you practice on your own, there's always surprises. The more you do it, the better you get or at least more comfortable.
I've been to a few interviews where I nailed it and didn't get the job (better candidate came along after or Joe Schmoe decided to hire his wife's brother's pet dog's friend's neighbor instead - scratch that as practice session).
Then there are interviews where I did crappy and got the job offer.

Yes, it is bad news. That's not a good sign.

I wouldn't bother with the obligatory thank you email.

Nah it's fine. Almost all of my interviews that I've got the jobs for lasted around that. One time I had a 2 hour interview but that was ridiculous. Still got the job. Either way what's important is that you have a good time with the interviewer and feel comfortable, confident. Time does not dictate whether the interview went well or not.

especially if it is a first interview with that employer, you might be fine. sometimes they are just weeding out the grossly unqualified before they really grill you.
