Is it absolutely necessary to have a case?

I'm going to be buying a Socket A motherboard and I don't have enough money for a tower. My current case is a desktop, so there really isn't much I can do. Is there any way I could still run everything correctly laying on a piece of cardboard or something like that until I get a case?

Sure, I've done it before. Except I laid the mainboard on a piece of foam that came in the motherboard box. Just be really careful with the cards and cables, as it wouldn't be too hard to pull a card up or down and bust the slot.

Good Luck,
Jeremy

Well, turning it on will kind of be a problem won't it? And what powersupply will you use? Socket A's need a hefty power supply. It is probably best to get a case.

If you don't use a case, be sure your powersupply and mobo have the same ground. Also watch out for spills around it or static electricity elements bumping the mobo. Lots of things the case does that aren't immediately apparent but not impossible to overcome on a budget that can't swing $10 for shipping of a free case. Check out the classified adds on this forum.

If you cannont afford to buy a new case then you should not be building a new system or upgrading. Give me a break!

Well, the only reason that I'm buying the new motherboard is because I took my Radeon back and I have some extra money. My friend gave me a Duron 600MHz that I have nothing to do with, so.. That gives me even a better reason to get a motherboard. I know that I'm going to be getting a case during the next week or so, I just want to be able to see how it performs and everything before-hand.

Have some patience, my son. Believe it or not, patience is supposed to be a virtue not a weakness.
