is it a rule that the person with the biggest room in the apartment pays the most rent?

so me and my two roomates are sharing an apt and one of them has the basement, and its the same size as our two rooms, PLUS he has his own bathroom and shower.

shouldnt he pay more than us for rent?

we all pay 360+ utilities, so shouldnt he pay like 40 bucks more?

That's always how I have done it. My friends and I are about to get a place and the rooms very in size... we are all going to decide on something fair.

That would depend on what the three of you agreed upon when you moved in together. Also would need to factor other features in (e.g. does the basement lack windows where your rooms have them, etc)....

only if it is worked out beforehand.

Oh, and you guys are spoiled with nice rent prices 🙂

I have 1000$ for myself per month for 12x11x9 + tiny kitchen + tiny bathroom 🙁

I'd kill for rent that cheap.

but anyways.. yeah, he should probably pay more unless there are two people sharing the bigger room or you guys rotate or something like that.

Depends how much bigger, but a private bathroom would seem to me to be enough. Add in the double room size, heck yes. But it's wrong to change your agreement now. Is the basement finished or is he living like a serial killer down there?

no, they all have windows. we didnt really say anything about it beforehand, though i mentioned it. the third roomate wasnt there to decide anything, so its kind of difficult. im trying to explain it to him, but he doesnt seem to care.

stupid rich roomates.

its the same/better in every regard, i just would rather have the upstairs room. its not that i am mad at the kid or that i am jealous, it's the fact that we get exactly half as much as he does but are paying the same amnt. i mean, wtf...

and when i was like if you give me 20 bucks more a month, jokingly, he got pissed and said he wasnt going to give me anything.

If you didn't work it out beforehand don't worry about it.
Nickle and diming your way is pathetic.
I used to love watching roomies fight over who gets the wooden spoons when they move out

Kick him out, find a better room mate 😉

It needs to be worked out beforehand. Also if your other roomate doesnt care either just drop it because it wont end well.

then tell him to switch rooms or pay more, else you shit on his bed. while he's sleeping in it.

but yes, you guys are retarded for not working this out before hand.

yeah i probably will drop it, but we didnt work it out beforehand because no one knew what they wanted because the unit was in use so we couldnt tour it.

gah....some people are such assholes. i knew this would happen because i dont really like to confront people and hes a cocky asshole.

Yes, normally I would say that the occupant of the larger room has to pay more, but basements are usually cheaper so in this case I think it's even.

In either case, you should have negotiated this before moving in. Can't tell him to pay more now.

its not even a basement, its a first floor but the living room is the main floor. so its not underground, they just call it a basement, my bad.

and jack up the rent for that room before you find the new one. i have a friend that gave her roomy the bigger room with the built in bathroom, and her roommates rent is higher. the roommate also stated she would only pay 25% of the electrical bill due to my friend having 2 kids living there with her. it all works out.

absolutely the bigger rooms pays more. also, if there are two people in one room, they should pay a little less than the person who has their own room, but they shouldn't just get to split the cost that one person would have had to pay. basically, they still use the common areas just as much, but they don't get as much personal space, so some balance needs to be struck.
