either one is correct... why argue over it? when i want to get a whole pizza... i always ask for a pie... large pie = plain... large pie with meatballs = whole pizza with meatballs... etc

Like soda or pop, etc.

No, I've lived in Michigan, Indiana, and Ohio, and have family in NJ. I think its just a 'thing', not dictated by geography :)

You want a pizza but you order a pie. Its just the way things are.

If you get a single topping, then you disreguard pie. For example, a "Large Meatball". Multiple toppings are pie with the topping. Example: "A large pie with sausage and mushrooms"...

We say "pie" if we order a pie of pizza... but if we're referring to what we're going to eat, it's a pizza.

Wrong. A pie doesn't have to have a crust on top to be considered a pie. Also, pies can also be meat, not just fruit or cream.
