No, it is a historic. The H is not silent.

I have to side with BillGates on this one.

Depends on if you have a Cockney accent or are Arcadio. If you are either of these things, you'd say "an 'istoric." If not, you'd say "a historic."

EDIT: Think about it... do you say "an hospital," "an horrible," or "an heroic"? No, unless you have a Cockney accent. Or if your name is Arcadio.

This.

The key to the a/an rule is often forgotten: it's all dependent on how it sounds when you speak it, not how it's spelled.

Of course not, that's just silly. Then you would obviously say "a hallway"

Yes. Hotdog down an hallway ruins the joke!

That link says you can do it however you want. It claims that "an historic" is grammatically correct, but you could find just as many people with good credentials who'd say that "a historic" is right. I don't know why some people make a special exception for the word "historic," but in every other case, you just use A or An based on how it sounds ("an hour," "a u-turn").

Anyway, you have your link, I have mine: http://www.askoxford.com/askth...faq/aboutgrammar/hotel

It explains exactly why in my link, "The 'h' in 'historic' is known as an 'h' aspirate" ;)
Yes, it's pedantic, but I don't give a hoot :p
Your link fails because it doesn't address why it's done. I win, Nik loses (just like always)

My mommy told me never to accept candy from strangers, especially if they ask you to get into their car or are naked amphibians.

This is an historic occasion, a hour which will live forever. Now if only we had an host who would bring me a hors d'oeuvres...
