Is it a good time to buy Radeon 9800pro 128mb?

Hi,
I am planning to buy a Radeon 9800pro 128MB
because it is just $220

When will nvidia and ati release their newer weapons?

is it a good time to get one of it? or they will be releasing newer card in a month or so...

Well this is a question that you have to make to yourself.
IMO you have these options:

1. Take the 9800pro now that price/perf is reaching the perfect 10.
2. Wait for the new ones to come, but then you would have to pay for a brand new high end card

That's what always happens right? It's how you see it.

I ordered one of these yesterday. I cannot wait!

Faye,
Now is the best time to get one of these. If you wait around for new ones to come out, you will wait forever. You can wait until new cards to come out and pay a huge premium on those OR you can wait for the 9800pro to drop price when the new cards come out. Those are the only 2 reasons to wait. Well, the first reason is out the door, unless you're rich and want to shell out $499.00 on a video card. As for the 2nd reason, the price for the 9800pro will drop some, but I don't see it dropping below $150 any time within a year regardless of what comes out.

Yep, it was the right time for me to replace my Abit Siluro ti4200 OTES. Ordered one on Monday.

oh cool..

if the newer cards are that far away (4months)

i will definitely buy one now..

Heard of "HIS"? heard that Tom's hardware rated this little baby really good....

are all R9800p the same(almost the same)?

Doesn't CompUSA still have the $199 deal? Granted, with tax its going to come pretty close to the $212 price but you would get a non OEM card with a 3 year warrenty. If I was buying one and that deal is still on (I am pretty sure it is) I would get that over the OEM on NewEgg. Of course I have a CompUSA near me and not everybody does.

Ah, thats too bad. That was a great price for a none OEM card.

Well, Anand has this to say in a recent blog:

I would strongly recommend against buying an expensive video card before April/May.

So it would appear the rumors of NV40/R420 being twice (or thrice!) as fast as the current high end are shaping up to be true. 🙂

Both new cards are expected to debut around Cebit, mid-March. Both nV and ATi have recently stuck to a schedule of card availability four weeks after launch, so we may well see the next gen in stores by late April.

Edit: It seems the new launch dates are April 1st, so cards should be out by May 1st. Hopefully they'll both be shown at Cebit, if not officially launched/announced.

But we won't see it for anywhere near $200. Expect $400+ for the new cards. If you don't have that kind of money to spend, buy a 9800P now and enjoy it. I don't think the 9800P's price will drop much in the near future, and I don't expect the next gen to approach $200 for at least another year. The 9800P should perform at least decently in both D3 and HL2.

Anand's post was more related to the $350+ 9800XT and 5950U. No point in shelling out that much if a much, much faster card will be out in relatively short order.

Yeah this is what I was thinking when I bought my BFG 5900. I was planning to wait until the new cards were released but figured these new cards wouldn't drop into my price range until at least a year from now.

Rumor now has it that the r420 is ready to be put in production right now, and will likely be available shortly after CeBit (March 18-24). The NV40 is rumored to be a month behind the r420 at this time, and will likely be out in late April/May.

Right now though, I think the best choice is certainly the 9800 Pro at about 200 bucks. Neither one of the new cards will be a good value when they come out, and the prices will stay high for a long time.
