Is it a good idea to get a Pixma IP4000 now?

Will they continue to make cheap inks for it for a while? I dont want to be forced to spend alot on the Canon brand inks. Will local stores have any more ip4000's or any online stores?

There are tons of Canon models in use that all use the same inks (6 series and 3e series) - they will be around more than long enough for your printer to wear out first. It is unlikely you will find an iP4k in any store - you waited a bit too long to get a really good price on a new one. Try eBay or the FS/T sections here and elsewhere, craigslist, postaroo, etc. A lot of folks are asking list price on the 4k and 5k and they are worth it if you'll be printing a lot. Save tons on ink as the tanks for the older models will always be cheaper than those for the new models.
. But I'm not so much against the new line now as the cloners should have tanks for them fairly soon - they have been out there for nearly 4 months now. And you can usually get one for considerably less than the older equivalent. The 4200 which replaced the 4k has the 5-tank setup of the old 5k. IDK what Canon did with the 5k replacement...
. You have to weigh initial purchase price and cost of ink over the period you plan to keep it and see which comes out ahead.

The local Office Max said they'd give me one of the display models for $126. He said it was only on the shelf for a few weeks and never printed a page because there wasn't a demo unit hooked up to it. I don't know if he is lying or not about that part 😛. Is this a good price considering the ink is cheap? wonder how long before ip42000 ink is cheap. and is it true the 4200's prints last alot longer? i dont want my pictures to fade out

YW, Sonic.

I was trying to write another reply last night and couldn't get thru to AT or pretty much anything else - wonder what happened. I was going to say that $126. wasn't that good of a deal as near the end of their run you could almost always get the 4k for $100. or less AR (sometimes as low as $50.).

But you will save enough on your first ink replacement (unless the clone tanks for the new models hit the streets before then) to cover the diff between that and a rebated 4200. After that, it's all gravy... But IDK, I just saw the 4200 at a very low AR price at Outpost.com ($80.) . Toss a coin, I guess.

ps. Since the 4200 is pretty much the equivalent to last year's iP5000, I'm sore tempted to grab one myself. At $80. AR it would seem to be a steal. .bh.

Yes, the epson tanks have been duped for a long time now (replacements wouldn't be so cheap if they had to go out and buy the used tanks to refill like HP and Lex) , but many are use-once only (can't be reset and refilled like the OE ones can).
. I was just thinking that you might want to check prices on the Canon Multi-function units as some of them are based on the 4000 printer mechanism and are still current stock (the 700 series, I think).
