Is it a bad sign when I have the address for Western Digital RMAs memorized??

here we go...another maxtor (read: anyone but WD) is better and WD sucks thread. wont you people get a life and realize every manufacturer will have a few bad drives now and then? shesh.

edit: and yes, i have RMAed some WDs, but ive also RMAed maxtors, IBMs, and seagates.

if it was now and then i'd be fine with it, but it's never ending!!
I've had at least 10 20-60 Gig drives die within a year of purchase.

I had to get four WDs in a row replaced... one was DOA when they sent it back. This was in a good working environment with decent cooling but a lot of disk activity, which apparently used the disks up in a wicked hurry. Every time I sent one back I asked for a new, not refurb, disk, and every time they said no and gave me a slightly bigger disk that would die within three months. I will no longer use WDs for any active drive (ie storage is OK with backups but they'll never be C: )

(edited for an inadvertent smiley)

I exclusively use WD for my system builds and I haven't had any problems with them yet but I had one go bad in my personal system and in a system I didn't build. But, on the other hand, I've had an 80GB Maxtor go bad too. It's all in the roll of the dice or a bad batch.

I send so much crap back to Symbol Technologies that I am getting to know their whole RMA department on a first name basis.

i got a 120gb wd sitting in an a aluminum carry case (external USB case). Its a tight fit, no cooling..but i keep it upright so it the aluminum case can dissapate heat..

i hope this wont cause any problems. I dont use the drive much, its a back up but still i cant afford to lose about 60gb of data on it.

I have RMA'ed several Maxtors but I just sent my first WD back now...I hope I get a larger one in return 😉

you'll get the same size in a refurb most likely.

i've RMA'd two WD's - a 40GB and a 160GB. both lasted about 9 months each.

future drives will be seagate - no exceptions.
