Is is just me or is Firefox 3 a memory hog?

I have recently noticed that Firefox takes about 75MB of memory when I do nothing but open the browser. With Firefox 2, though I had no problem, took about 10MB. I have 1.5GB -4GB in all my computers, but still I was interested as to why it is sucking mp all this RAM. Also, I have the same addons as before.

Exact same usage here -- like 65MB to start and at times more. The only addons I have are the adblock and the comman download tray thingy. Nothing else. I also have 4GB so I don't miss it, and it does open up in a flash so no complaints, but it is interesting it has that large of a footprint.

Maybe the fact I run AVG? does it affect it? I can't imagine the adblock being that consuming or the download addon.

The only addons I use are Adblock plus and Mcaffee Site Advisor, the same plugins I've been using forever. Like I said, no problems, just a curiosity issue. Opera is starting to look nicer. Why does it need so much memory. It uses almost as much memory as watching a dvd on windows media player does.

104 with 4 tabs open and 6 addons, dont be discouraged though in mac it uses more and seems to use a steady 10-20% of 3.0GHz dual core processor... in vista though 1% while inactive

2x add-ons, 1x tab, and 9x plugins
~62MB.

It used to be lower but I undid all my memory reducing changes in about:config cause it seems a little sluggish after.

100 tabs, 390mb.
why 100? i build up tabs and always keep restoring the same session and adding to it so it keeps growing😛 with 2gb ram i don't have much incentive to trim it down...have memory, might as well use it😛
its not so bad, ff2 probably take 100more mb.
i never have no tabs open so i dont care how much it uses with nothing loaded.

I remember firefox 2 having insane memory requirements. Firefox 3 has toned it down significantly.

That's what all of my browsers look like, but with fewer tabs open. It's not unusual for firefox to use 400mb of ram. Right now I'm in firefox 3, 4 tabs open, 130mb ram used.

Firefox 2.0.0.16, 84MB of Ram for one tab for anandtech, and another for the pcmech forums. When i work (12-40 tabs open), i routinely see anywhere from 180-500MB just for Firefox. Vista x64 2GB Ram.

105 MB here, 5 add-ons, 6 tabs open and I haven't rebooted in days 🙂
I know it's not "perfect" but FF 3 is one of the best browsers ever. IE's day are long gone on my machines 😉

it doesn't.
not these days with gigs of ram as standard.
what matters is speed. 3 is snappier than 2.
thats all i care about.

Exactly.

FF3 is far snappier than 2 for me, and the it is better overall too. The awesome bar one of my favorite features.

I'm happy when programs utilize my RAM to increase speediness, & FF3 seems to do that.

I've got lots to spare 🙂

With either 1.5 or 4 gigs you are worried about a measly 75MB of memory? Firefox 3 uses a little less memory on startup than FF2 and has the added benefit of not leaking massive amounts of memory, like FF2 likes to do. It is not uncommon for FF2 to use over 500 MB of RAM.
